And now for my next trick…

The drive failure over at Diary-X?
Totally unsalvageable.
My blog?
Gone.
Still trying to decide if I’m going to stay here or go back to diaryland.
I got my first computer in 1982 when my dad brought one home from work (thanks IBM!).
I took my first computer class in 1984. What was the one thing they drilled into our heads?
Save your data. Save your data. Save your data.
I guess that was a lesson I learned 22 years too late. I’m a moron.
Anyway, I’m not going to kid myself and completely mourn the loss of all my entries. Most of them were me whining about how tired I was. But there were some cool stories in there. And there was some pretty funny shit that’s lost to the ether. I still have all the photos on a different host, but without the words what’s the point?
I do want to continue to write. So now I have to make the decision to stay here or go back to Dland. I left diaryland because of the bi-monthly server crashes (which now seem really small in comparison to losing everything) and a complete lack of tech support. Blogger seems nicer, I like the template and the multiple entries on one page blah blah blah.
Please don’t suggest Moveable type. I’ve thought about it, and right now I don’t have the time or the energy to learn it. Gah.
Ok, I’m off now to go and flog my lazy ass with a blank CD-R.
You’ll find that Blogger offers so much more than Dland…and it’s FREE! Free comments, free word verification thingy (which I see you’ve found), AND you can preview your entry before you post it. OR save it as a draft for later. Easy peasy! Glad to have you back!
I liked Diary-X, and it makes me sad that it is dead. I was lucky; I double-posted so all my entries lived on at Diaryland. (And I made a backup of D-X on January 16th.)I only lost the ONE private entry I ever made.
I’m not sure what I think of Blogger… I signed up a long time ago so I could leave comments, but have never used it. But I will still read you, wherever you are!
You can retrieve everything you posted previous to your move from Diaryland. Here’s something I copied and pasted from D-Land news that Andrew posted today:

old diaries
Howdy do! I have had a number of people recently asking about old diaries they had with us, and whether we still have old entries. The answer in all cases is yes, we have never deleted old diaries, just moved them offline if they have been inactive for a long time. So if you have had a DiaryLand diary at any point back to when we opened in 1999, you can still get it back, yes!
The easiest way is to log in, then go to your diary’s address and click the “regenerate” link. If however you don’t remember your password, you may have to use the “can’t remember your password” link on the login screen. If you are still having trouble, you can email help AT diaryland.com and please put the subject line “NEED TO RETRIEVE OLD DIARY” (so I can sort them and do them all at once).
If you have any friends who might want to know this info, let them know, and have a nice weekend.
Oh my God. So really? All of our stuff at Diary-X is gone forever? Holy Jesus. If I weren’t so pissed off I might cry. Fuck. Well, I’m glad I didn’t have enough money to send him any so that he could buy a new computer in the week preceding the loss of all of my photos and writing. Christ. Anyway, I have a package for you that I’m still trying to scrape enough change together to mail.
